Where are we going?

Human Nature and the Struggle for our Democracy

Our nation is in an existential struggle pitting our democracy against the advancing forces of autocracy. America’s growing inequalities in income and wealth and persistent racial inequities have divided our country, polarized our politics, and unleashed our tribal instincts. Our evolved human nature has given us a hybrid genotype. We are all partly hierarchical/authoritarian and partly egalitarian, and we are all tribal. Studies have shown that our authoritarian traits may be dominant over our egalitarian traits. Perhaps our human nature is more compatible with authoritarian rule rather than an egalitarian democracy. In Where Are We Going?, Brodie explores the challenges we face. Will we be able to mitigate our economic and racial inequities and create a more egalitarian society? Can our democracy prevail over the forces of autocracy? Are we up to the challenge?

Why are we here?

The Story of the Origin, Evolution, and Future of Life on Our Planet

Why Are We Here? takes us on an educational journey from the Big Bang to the evolution of intelligent life in a search for the meaning of human existence. It addresses so many questions about the evolution of life. How did chemistry come to life? How did the evolution of photosynthesis with the release of oxygen by ancient cyanobacteria change the course of evolution on our planet? How did the mass extinctions, such as the asteroid collision that wiped out the dinosaurs, reset the clock and change the direction of evolution? How did we Homo sapiens become so dominant? We share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees, yet we build vast civilizations while chimps are confined to forests and, sadly, to zoos and experimental laboratories. How come? Cultural and technological evolution have outstripped the slow pace of biological evolution and are now driving change and shaping the future of life on our planet. We are now in control of much of our evolution. How will we manage this? Can we learn to cooperate to escape the many existential threats that hover over us? This book is an educational and deeply fascinating journey that provides new perspectives on how we view the world, our place and purpose in the Universe, and the future of humanity.

KIRKUS Independent Professional Review

WHY ARE WE HERE?

“A well-written, enjoyable, and thoroughly researched summary of everything that brought humans to the present day. The book is both informational and highly engaging, in the tradition of Bill Bryson’s A Brief History of Nearly Everything and works equally well for pleasure reading and as a substitute for a science textbook. Readers who are interested in refreshing their knowledge of science fundamentals will find the volume a useful overview while those who join Brodie in asking the title question will have plenty of fodder for further discussion.”
